You might have noticed that there are a lot of famous media franchises that are being remade with women as the lead instead of men. Ghostbusters, Doctor Who, and the latest Star Wars films are fine examples of women doing everything that a man can do in the same role. Some would argue they even do it better.
Not British MP Nick Fletcher. He blames the vilification of masculinity and women replacing male characters in films and TV as the reason for rising crime rates in England.
“Everywhere, not the least within the cultural sphere, there seems to be a call from a tiny but very vocal minority that every male character or good role model must have a female replacement,” said Tory MP Fletcher in a recent speech. “One only needs to look at the discussion surrounding the next James Bond. And it's not just James Bond. In recent years, we have seen Doctor Who, Ghostbusters, Luke Skywalker, The Equalizer, all replaced by women, and men are left with the Krays and Tommy Shelby. Is there any wonder we are seeing so many young men committing crime?"
An interesting selection of role models there, Mr. Fletcher. Luke Skywalker was a literal rebel, while both James Bond and The Equalizer feature main characters that murder hundreds of people. The Ghostbusters were arrested and committed multiple B&Es, while Doctor Who is some weird alien time wizard who lives in a phone booth. If anything, the Doc’s female companion is intended to be the better role model for everyone, not just women.
And rather than blaming mainstream media for brainwashing the nation's youth (as so many elderly politicians have done since the very creation of the words "mainstream media"), perhaps we blame the more traditional sources of crime: motivation and opportunity. The opportunity is suddenly there because COVID lockdowns have ended and people have left their houses for the first time in months, providing the opportunity for robberies, while the rising cost of living provides ample motivation.
Just a thought. Frankly, I think a female James Bond might be kinda cool.
